Art is the one area of my life that is unbound by rules and expectations. I can lose myself for hours on a piece. It’s a meditative process for me, one that I value immensely.
I use both cotton rag and linen canvases. I utilize acrylic, and watercolor paints most frequently but am exploring the use of oils in my current works.
I know a piece is finished when it sings, it’s difficult to explain the feeling, it has energy at that moment. I know the piece is ready to stand on it’s own, that it has a story to tell.
The Pacific Northwest, with its rugged coastlines, majestic mountains, and verdant forests, provides a constant source of inspiration for my art.
My focus lies on celebrating the wonders of the natural world around us. From the towering evergreens silhouetted against a fiery sunset to the delicate details of a blooming wildflower, I strive to translate the beauty and complexity of nature onto canvas. I find myself particularly drawn to the interplay of light and shadow that dances across landscapes, the vibrant hues of native flora, and the captivating creatures that call this region home.
Each piece begins with a careful observation of the natural world. I spend time outdoors, sketching and taking photographs to capture the nuances of light, color, and form. Back in my studio, I begin the process of translating these observations into a painting. I often start with a loose underpainting, using broad strokes to establish the composition and color palette. As the painting progresses, I layer additional details, refining the forms and textures until the final image emerges.
I am drawn to the immediacy and spontaneity of watercolor, as well as the rich depth and versatility of acrylics. By combining these two mediums, I am able to create paintings that are both expressive and detailed. I often use a variety of techniques, such as layering, blending, and glazing, to achieve the desired effect.
Through my artwork, I aim to evoke a sense of wonder and appreciation for the incredible diversity of the Pacific Northwest. Each piece is an invitation to delve deeper into the natural world, to appreciate its intricate details, and to marvel at its sheer magnificence.
